How to get fit during quarantine

Okay, let’s admit it. We all are under lock-down, we should not go out until necessary. But what about working out? We can’t just sit, watch TV, play games, work from home and not take care of our bodies, right? So, after testing these tips for something about two weeks already, I have decided to share them with the world. We all finally have some more time to spare, so why not try and actually do something good for our mind and our bodies? And don’t worry, you really don’t need any fancy equipment, you can start directly from your garage or living room or garden, it really doesn’t matter. Just start!

1.     Develop the right mindset

You would be surprised how powerful your mind is or how powerful you are and what you can achieve with the right mindset. Of course, the mind is trying to take the path of the least resistance, so maybe not working out regularly will be one of the things you will struggle with. Or with eating healthy. It’s okay. I know how hard it is to fight against your own body and mind. But once you conquer the mind and you will learn how to talk to yourself when things get tough, you will achieve great things. One of the things that may help you with this battle is to keep a journal and there you can track your progress. You can also write down the things you struggle with and the things you find easier.

While you are going through this process, you can find that on different days you will struggle with different things. That’s okay as well. Just be sure that you don’t give up.

And what’s key to not giving up? Find a buddy. It can be a member of your household, or some friend (be sure to keep the distance) and you two can support each other when one of you will feel demotivated. You can call, chat and try to talk about the things you struggle with but also with the little victories you encounter. One of the small victories can be that you are finally able to run a mile or do a hundred of squats or eat healthy without cheating for the whole day, week or month.

That said, this whole process is about getting fit, that’s the ultimate goal, right? Let’s break it down into smaller goals, such as be able to run 5 miles. Lose 5 kgs. Be sure to set a deadline. That way you can keep in mind what you are working towards and it may help you with being motivated.

2. Drink water. A lot.

Water is so helpful for our bodies. It boosts our immune systems, especially when it is mixed with some lemon juice. Water can also help to energize our muscles and water is the best way to replace the lost fluids due to sweating during workouts. Also, your skin will look good. Do I really need to go on? Just drink that cup of water!

3. Eat healthy

Now more than ever we really need to take care of our bodies. We are indeed in the middle of a world pandemic. And, eating healthy is one of the most important things for getting fit, it is not just regularly working out. The two come hand in hand. Eating healthy means getting enough of nutrients, minerals, vitamins and water so you can maintain your health, get more energy and overall, feel good.

4. Regular workout

I know, I know. But it is true that without pain and hard work, no result and gain will appear. I know that we often don’t like working out because it often brings pain. But the pain is, let’s call it, payment so we can afford being healthy. We have to feel that the hard work is paying off and we are moving forward. Now you actually have the time to get fit and start some regular workouts, which can eventually lead into making it a habit. You know, if you’re working from home, or are at home because the schools are shut down, you can utilize the time and get fit or fitter.

You can search YouTube for workouts, or you can start by some simple routines, such as short jogs outside populated places (we are still in quarantine) or riding a bike. Your body needs to get used to the regular activity, so start slow and then try to build it up, either by prolonging the cardio or adding some weight to your strength training. Yes, you can do strength training even when you’re at home, you can use your own bodyweight. For exercises with your own bodyweight, try to Google them. Really, there are countless of sources for the workout routines.

And, don’t be afraid to explore, it takes some time to find out what suits you and your needs. For example, it took me a few weeks to figure out that I always need to train my whole body, I don’t do leg days, or chest days. I workout for more than one hour and I try to train every area of my body. But what works for me, doesn’t have to work for you. So try to discover what’s the best thing for you and then stick to it.

I hope that this article can help you, even if just a bit, on the path of getting fit or fitter.

Thank You for reading.

  1. My friend is a fitness instructor and I was just telling her how everyone used to say that they would workout if they had time and now that we all have some extra time, I expect to see all of them come out of this looking awesome. 🤣 She was complaining about not being able to go the gym and I told her that I feel like now is my chance to catch up to some of her awesomeness and work out more. I started a 30 day yoga challenge with my daughter that I found on YouTube. I’m on day 3 and already I am thinking I’d like to add something else to it. Now is our time for that “glow up”! lol Thank you for the encouragement!
